Sensor Type:

What is it?

StarlightEye is a cutting-edge, open-source camera board designed specifically for Raspberry Pi 5 and Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4 boards. It features the IMX585 CMOS image sensor, this sensor delivers high-resolution (8Mpix at 3840x2160) images and videos with improved low-light performance and dynamic range. The board also includes an integrated TMP117 temperature sensor for precise temperature measurements plus a 6-axis IMU sensor on board.

Compatibility and Incompatibility

Please note that the StarlightEye is designed for Raspberry Pi 5 and Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4 boards with a 22-pin FPC connector with 4-lane MIPI interface and use the same pinout as the Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4 IO Board. Ensure compatibility with your specific board before proceeding. StarlightEye's 4-lane MIPI interface requirements makes it incompatible with most standard Raspberry Pi boards before Raspberry Pi 5, so it is crucial to verify the compatibility of your board before using StarlightEye.

Driver Development and Kernel Compilation

Be aware that the driver for StarlightEye is currently in development, and using the camera board may require you to compile the Linux kernel or install DKMS kernel driver. We are actively working on improving the driver and streamlining the integration process, but please consider this aspect before using StarlightEye in your projects.

Why did you make it?

We created StarlightEye to address the need for a high-quality, affordable, and accessible camera module for advanced Raspberry Pi projects. With the growing popularity of the Raspberry Pi, we recognized that the community would benefit from a camera board that enhances their projects' capabilities while staying within budget constraints. Our goal was to enable photography enthusiasts, developers, and makers to take their Raspberry Pi projects to the next level with a powerful camera module.

What makes it special?

StarlightEye stands out from other camera boards due to its unique combination of features and compatibility:

1. High-resolution imaging: The IMX585 CMOS image sensor with 4K pixels captures stunning high-resolution images and videos, ensuring crisp visuals for your projects.

2. 4-lane MIPI interface: The high-speed data transfer enabled by the 4-lane MIPI interface ensures smooth performance and real-time image processing.

3. Integrated I2C IR Filter Switch: There is also a CH32v003 MCU on board that acted as a I2C device to switch on and off the IR filter. No more swapping IR filters manually!

3. Integrated temperature sensor: The built-in TMP117 temperature sensor adds extra functionality and versatility to your projects by providing accurate temperature readings.

4. On-board IMU sensor: The on-board IMU sensor is also connected to IMX585 vertical sync signal, so it can provide accurate IMU motion that aligns with the frame timing.

4. Open-source: StarlightEye is built using KiCad v6, an open-source EDA software, allowing for easy modification and customization to suit your needs. The project also includes open-source hardware and software components, fostering a collaborative community for continuous improvement and innovation.
